Higher education in Qatar

Higher education in Qatar is overseen by the Ministry of Education. The country has a rapidly expanding higher education system, with one of the largest numbers of universities and colleges in the Middle East.

Qatar offers an exceptional range of world-class, prestigious educational programs and opportunities. Some of the notable universities include:

  • Qatar University: It is the country’s first higher education institution. The University has rigorously pursued educational excellence and the highest quality research. QU is a successful educational establishment of ten colleges with a wide range of educational programs.

  • Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU): HBKU is a public university located within Education City in Doha. The university offers interdisciplinary programs that are designed to be innovative and forward-looking, based on novel approaches to research, education, and community engagement.

  • Georgetown University in Qatar: Established in 2005, the Georgetown University in Qatar is a for-profit private higher education institution located in the suburban setting of the metropolis of Doha.

These universities offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, generally lasting four years, two years, and three to four years respectively. While international students are generally accepted into the leading Qatari universities, restrictions among other lesser-known universities are likely to vary, and admission for female students is limited to a select few universities and women-only institutions.

Facilities at the leading universities in Qatar are second to none, thanks to the nation’s ongoing and significant investment in higher education. The wealth invested comes largely from the country’s vast fuel resources – including approximately 20% of the planet’s oil reserves – which has powered the nation’s rapid development over the last half-century, with a strong impact on trade, business, tourism, education, technology, transport, architecture, and culture, particularly within the key cities.
